Practical Soil Biology

This sixty-minute webinar is intended to teach the practical applications of soil biology, and why and how we should manage this resource. It is the perfect class for those new to soil microbiology, or as a refresher for those already using a biologically-based approach. The objective is to convey an understanding of how your current growing practices affect soil biology, and how you can better remediate your soil to maximize nutrient availability and diversify your soil microbiology. Whether you are interested in the fundamentals of soil biology to manage a garden, farm, turf, or landscape, you will find this course informative and essential for your professional goals.  We will discuss the importance of testing your soil or an amendment to know how your practices affect soil organisms.

Worth 1 continuing education credit through the Oregon Landscape Contractors Board.

Understanding your Soil Biology Report

Knowing your soil’s biological profile will allow you to enhance soil organisms so they are more suitable for your crop. Ongoing biological monitoring ensures optimal conditions throughout the growing season. Farmers, educators, gardeners and landscapers all find it very helpful to know what information is available in testing for soil microbiology, and what the results mean for your plant's health.  The results of any test must help guide your next practices, and having a clear understanding of your soil report will help you take remediation steps to optimize plant growth and soil health.

Biologically Based Pest Management

Managing pests is one of the most challenging aspects of land management, and it all begins with the soil habitat. In this sixty-minute webinar, we give an overview of a biological perspective to pest management, and review the fundamentals of diversity in agricultural systems, and using knowledge of life cycles to effectively prevent and control pests. We discuss the challenges in taking one simple approach to pest management, but how a holistic approach with biology as the guide provides more effective pest controls.

Compost Tea and Alternatives

Compost tea offers a simple and effective method of obtaining all the benefits of a biological approach to growing.  When compost cannot be applied or hauled to land, for example in a green roof setting, tea may provide a way to apply the microorganisms from compost.  However, if produced improperly, tea can do more harm than good.  Earthfort has been testing and manufacturing tea for fifteen years, so we clarify appropriate tea application and methodology.  Students will learn the most effective methods of production, and how to integrate tea into growing practices.
